Last Sunday, September 16th, Alexandra Kazickas Lithuanian School in Riverhead started its 13th school year already. Getting together on the beach, sharing summer adventures and building sand castles might seem a bit unusual for school, but it has become a tradition to A. Kazickas Lithuanian School community.
Children had a lot to chat about after a long summer break and teachers were planning their work in the classrooms already. This year it was decided to build one large Gediminas sand castle. School's calendar is filled not just with Lithuanian language, history, nature and music lessons, but also with interesting trips and events that help foster Lithuanian culture. Following Saturday school's students are taking a trip to Maironis Lithuanian School in Brooklyn where children theater from Lithuania will introduce history lesson "Zalia Gyva".
A. Kazickas Lithuanian School was established in 2006 thanks to Alexandra Kazickas generosity and Lithuanian diaspora initiative. Over the past twelve years, the Kazickas Family Foundation gave $305,000 to school and remains its main sponsor.
The school is attended by close to 30 students ages 4 to 15 and four adults. School prepares Lithuanian youth to become active members of Global Lithuanian community with a goal to foster Lithuanian language, cultural heritage and national pride.
Such work inspired to create new programs for youth who graduate Lithuanian schools. In summer of 2018 the Kazickas Family Foundation together with the Global Lithuanian Leaders introduced new intensive summer internship program for Lithuanian diaspora youth "We Connect Lithuania". Twenty young men and women from USA, Canada and Australia spent 6 weeks gaining experience at the leading companies and organizations while discovering modern and innovative Lithuania.
Alexandra Kazickas Lithuanain School also laid foundation for the Alexandra Kazickas Grant Program (AKGP) at the Kazickas Family Foundation. This program has been supporting Lithuanian Heritage Schools in the US since 2012. In 2018 46 such schools opened their doors for Lithuanian diaspora students.
