In 2017 Emergency Medicine pioneers in Kaunas and Vilnius joined the experts in Cincinnati with the help of the Kazickas Family Foundation to gain knowledge and experience. According to Head of the Emergency department Kestutis Stasaitis, Kaunas Clinics has a special wing dedicated specifically just for the Emergency department that was built recently according to the latest global standards. It is equipped with the latest equipment and has a dedicated staff, however it was lacking the expertise of strong management skills. Program's initiator Dr. Herbert Loyd joined forces with Kaunas Clinics Emergency Medicine pioneers Kestutis Stasaitis and Nedas Jasinskas, as well as Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Clinics Advisor to Director, Pranas Serpytis, starting a 7 step program to expose 22 Lithuanian Physicians training in the specialty of Emergency Medicine about how to manage and direct Emergency Medicine Departments in community hospitals.
Between Spring of 2017 and the end of year 2019, 2 physicians at a time, one from Kaunas and another one from Vilnius, joined Emergency medicine doctor Herb Loyd, head of Emergency medicine at Cincinnati hospital Kurt Knochel, Tri Health Good Samaritan Hospital Administrator Jamie Easterling and their incredible team of experts for 4-6 weeks.
2017 completed the training for 6. 2018 completed training for 8 more, and then in 2019 an additional 8 Resident physicians finished training to fulfill the goal of 22 total. The three year time frame is based on the notion that these 22 will create a nucleus with similar management exposure and capability. This helps to create a level field for Emergency Medicine advancing in Lithuania. By the end of 2019 there is sufficient corporate knowledge and skill to develop a directorship management program internal to Lithuania.
Upon returning to Lithuania current emergency medicine residents together with fresh graduates presented their experience gained in Cincinnati, USA. Each resident who goes to USA gets exposed to the specifics of the local healthcare system. They also work on special projects - initiatives that are later implemented in Lithuanian hospitals to increase the care of the patients back home. Year 2019 marks the end of the first collaborative initiative between the Kazickas Family Foundation and the Emergency medicine forces of Lithuania. It generated a "critical mass" of more than 20 young physicians with experience in USA healthcare model, that serve as a catalyst of change in Lithuania.
