A visit to the Blessed M.Sopocko Hospice in Vilnius, Lithuania
07/29/2015
The Blessed Michal Sopocko Hospice, one of the KFF 2014 grantees, was founded in Vilnius in 2009 by the Sisters of Merciful Jesus invited by the Cardinal of the Lithuanian RCC Audrys J. Bačkis from Poland to Lithuania. Renovated and opened in 2012 the facility became the first Hospice in Lithuania.
In the Hospice, medical and social services are supplied to terminally ill patients and their families by an interdisciplinary team of professional providers (currently a staff of 35) and volunteers (including the Sisters of Merciful Jesus) who take a patient-directed approach to managing illness in a patent's home and in the facility. The Blessed Michal Sopocko Hospice can house 14 patients at a time.
