For the fourth year in a row, American University hosted the Heritage Language community programs conference, sponsored by American University's School of Education and TESOL Program in Washington, DC; the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL); and the National Heritage Language Resource Center (NHLRC) at UCLA.
The Lithuanian team this year included J. Bujanauskas (Director of Washington K. Donelaitis Lithuanian School), I. Verbusaitiene (Director of Lithuanian School of Washington), G. Urbonaite-Narkeviciene (Director of Boston Lithuanian School), N. Baumiliene (formerly Director of A. Kazickas Lithuanian school, currently Director of the Kazickas Family Foundation, NY).
The Lithuanian representatives have been coming to the conference for four years, and this year were asked to join the National Coalition board of Community-Based Heritage Language Schools, in an effort to represent a wide range of these schools (of 27 languages) in the US and to promote multilingualism.
Please, find time to open provided links not only to read through presentations but also to notice that this year G. Urbonaite-Narkeviciene and N. Baumiliene were among facilitators of workshops, and their featured profiles also gave exposure to the Lithuanian language and its programs in the US. The Lithuanian team presented the Lithuanian Language proficiency exam as part of the Alexandra Kazickas Grant Program.
Special attention should be paid to the presentation of Jose Viana, of the US Department of Education, who featured A.Kazickas Lithuanian School among the Heritage schools examples for which federal grants program will be created.
