During the separate trips to Lithuania, John and Jurate Kazickas both took time to meet with the representatives of one of the newest and most progressive medical specialties in Lithuania - Emergency medicine.
During the John Kazikas' visit to Kaunas Clinics, Head of the Emergency department Kestutis Stasaitis together with young Emergency medicine residents showed him special wing dedicated specifically just for the Emergency department at Kaunas Clinics, that was built recently according to the latest global standards. It is equipped with the latest equipment and has a dedicated staff, however it was lacking the expertise of strong management skills. Three years ago Emergency Medicine pioneers in Kaunas and Vilnius joined the experts in Cincinnati with the help of the Kazickas Family Foundation to earn the knowledge and experience. Since then 14 Emergency Medicine residents from Lithuania traveled to Cincinnati and joined Emergency medicine doctor Herb Loyd, head of Emergency medicine at Cincinnati hospital Kurt Knochel, Tri Health Good Samaritan Hospital Administrator Jamie Easterling and their incredible teams of experts for 5 weeks. It is a part of a seven step program to expose 22 Lithuanian Physicians training in the specialty of Emergency Medicine about how to manage and direct Emergency Medicine Departments in community hospitals.
The following week Emergency medicine forces from Vilnius and Kaunas joined hands under the the hospitable roof of Kazickas family residence. First part of the meeting took place together with Jurate Kazickas. Current emergency medicine residents together with fresh graduates presented their impressions from field trips to Cincinnati, USA - a project which is generously supported by the Kazickas Family Foundation. Each resident who goes to USA gets exposed to the specifics of the local healthcare system. They also work on special projects - initiatives that are later implemented in Lithuanian hospitals to increase the care of the patients back home. This year will mark the end of the first collaborative initiative between the Kazickas Family Foundation and the Emergency medicine forces of Lithuania. It will generate a "critical mass" of more than 20 young physicians with experience in USA healthcare model, that will serve as a catalyst of change in Lithuania.
