ExCEL Abroad Student Suzanna Shares Her Experience in Lithuania and Gratitude
05/31/2017

Suzanna Larkin, an ExCEL Abroad (Exchanges for Culture, Education, and Leadership) program's 2016-2017 student, just returned home after spending a school year in Lithuania. Before the departure, Suzanna shared her gratitude and experience gained in Lithuania in her letter to the Kazickas Family Foundation which sponsors the program:

Dear Representatives of the Kazickas Family Foundation,

My name is Suzanna Larkin, and I am an exchange student originally from Portland, Oregon. I am currently living in Vilnius, Lithuania as part of the ExCEL Abroad scholarship program. I would like to thank the Kazickas Family Foundation for offering me this scholarship which allowed me to have an unforgettable school year abroad.

What this program has allowed me to experience is extraordinary. I lived with and learned the customs of a Lithuanian family, came to know even the smallest nooks and crannies in Old Town, and formed everlasting connections with people of all nationalities. I’ve become more independent in my daily activities, and I’m now able to navigate the public transport system in a different language. Furthermore, I’ve learned how to better communicate with those of various backgrounds and cultures. While verbally speaking Lithuanian takes years of study before reaching fluency, I’m much more confident in forming bonds and even just communicating nonverbally.

I’m going to miss the cobblestone roads, sunset-orange roof tiles, and the quirky culture of Vilnius, yet I hope for future students to be able to form their own paths as well. There really is no country quite like Lithuania, and I’m glad it became my second home. I’m positive that any future exchange students would share my enthusiasm for this small country and the lifelong relationships formed.

Now, as an alumna of ExCEL Abroad, I’m excited to share my stories with my friends and family in the United States. I have a newfound perspective I can bring to discussions with my future communities and college classes, and I will be sure to utilize my understanding of the Lithuanian culture.

Once again, thank you for your support of my year abroad through ExCEL Abroad.

Sincerely,

Suzanna Larkin

Two ExCEL Abroad 2017-2018 students, Belinda and Mallory will start their journey in Lithuania in August 2017. Program is looking for families that would like to host the girls. For more information please write: lithuania@americancouncils.eu
