ExCEL Abroad Student Volunteers for the Basketball Power
03/01/2018

Mallory Milestone is a current ExCEL Abroad 2017-18 participant who is spending her exchange year in Lithuania thanks to the support from the Kazickas Family Foundation. Over the course of this year she has been actively involved in volunteering with another great program sponsored by the KFF, Basketball Power.

Mallory is now featured as one of program's coordinators (http://krepsiniogalia.lt/en/contacts/). Here she shares some of her thoughts and reflections about her experience with the Basketball Power this year:

“As a Program Coordinator, I primarily assist with communication with sponsors and the general public, as well as manage communication with the U.S. embassy and organize volunteers. My English, which I initially regarded as a disadvantage, has been useful for editing social media posts and emailing sponsors such as the NBA, as well as assist with subtitles for videos. Additionally, I design and write Basketball Power’s newsletter (two have been sent out so far).  In my capacity, I communicate with the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius about organizing meetings, events, and trips. Finally, my close connections with both FLEX alumni and other students at my school (which requires volunteer hours every semester) has allowed me to quickly muster a diligent volunteer force for Basketball Power activities.

Working with Basketball Power has given back to me in so many ways; it has shown me sides of Lithuania that I do not typically encounter in my everyday life, including allowing me to meet people from other cities or even from villages. Basketball Power gives me substantial autonomy and responsibility; As a result of having been treated like an adult, I have been able find a role in the organization where I am able to best help the community by sharing my organizational and communication skills and also enjoy my experience to the fullest. It is enormously fulfilling knowing that with my background as an American, I am able provide unique services for an organization with such a noble cause.”

The Kazickas Family Foundation seeks to connect organizations it sponsors with a believe that everyone's shared knowledge, work and experience will lead to higher potential.
