On April 27, 2018 National Alopecia Association of Lithuania invited not just NAA community members, current and future, their family members and friends, but also specialists and doctors dermatovenerologists, trichologists and others who work in area related to alopecia, to the first such forum in Lithuania.
Forum speakers were not just science researchers, but also experienced physicians:
- prof. Abraham Zlotogorski, Department of Dermatology, Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel
- prof. Yiulya Ovcharenko, Department of Dermatovenereology, Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Kharkiv, Ukraine
- prof. Inessa Serbina, Department of Dermatovenereology, Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Kharkiv, Ukraine
- dr. Tatiana Silyuk, Trichology, St. Petersburg, Associate Member of International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery
Trichology (the branch of medical and cosmetic study and practice concerned with the hair and scalp) is at the embryonic stage in Lithuania, however guests brought the experience from the countries were they've been working in this field for decades. There is no alopecia treatment or medication, however its studies involve five different areas of research: genetics, dermatology, trichology, immunology and endocrinology. Specialists all agree that alopecia is multifactorial disorder and each case is different.
It is important to understand the progress in scientific research not just in a practical way, i.e. how scientists and practitioners are learning to help people affected by alopecia, but also to be in the middle of all research and discovery process, so that many wrong hypothesis could be dismissed while looking for the answers.
When choosing therapy, doctor's differential diagnostics knowledge and ability to evalute condition adequately is extremely important, so that patient doesn't try ineffective methods over and over again, but instead invests into ways to accept the fact that the best treatment might be no treatment at all.
One of forums goals was to trigger curiosity, desire to educate yourself and ask physicians all uncomfortable questions instead of passively waiting till someone brings that magic pill. It doesn't exists. Best treatment is loving yourself and your life without hair unconditionally, doing what you love, what is right, what's productive and creative; love and unconditional acceptance of your child and encouragement to live your life no matter what obstacles arise. Each other's support is the best alopecia medication.
Event was accredited by the Ministry of Health, specialists were issued certificates required for licence renewal. It is a huge achievement, because alopecia and trichological disorders were acknowledged by the Ministry of Health.
The Kazickas Family Foundation is glad to contribute to this new area in Lithuania and significant NAA work.
