After reading the Margaret Talbot article "The Addicts Next Door" in the New Yorker magazine, Annalina Kazickas became inspired to support efforts to help addicts seek recovery, follow through with treatment, and transition into a healthier life.
The US is in the midst of a serious opioid epidemic; in 2016 there were over 60,000 deaths from overdose, a rate that has tripled since 1999.
The Hope Dealer Project, a non-profit organization based in West Virginia, one of the states that has felt the effects of the opioid epidemic the hardest, was started by four women, each of whom have experienced personal loss. Through always making themselves available to patients - whether opening their homes, answering their phone, or driving them to the nearest rehabilitation center (sometimes a 4 hour drive one way) to working with insurance companies, rehab centers, and outpatient clinics, these women are selfless and relentless in their efforts. The fight to end addiction and overdose is complex and recovery is a daily struggle; with the Hope Dealers, the patient knows they're not alone.
The Kazickas Family Foundation is proud to support their efforts.
