"On this Veteran’s Day we must never forget the service of women to our country, especially during the Vietnam War," writes Jurate Kazickas, the president of the Kazickas Family Foundation, who is the co-author of the book, WAR TORN – STORIES OF WAR FROM THE WOMEN REPORTERS WHO COVERED VIETNAM.
"As a journalist covering that conflict in 1967/68, I saw first hand the courageous, selfless dedication of Army nurses working under great pressure in dangerous conditions. When dozens of grievously wounded soldiers would suddenly be choppered in from battlefields to triage stations, the nurses were ready. Many lives were saved because of the professionalism of these women. But the day in, day out carnage these nurses witnessed in their tours of duty they say they cannot forget. The faces of the young soldiers they could not save have haunted them, even after all these years. Few people understand the emotional trauma these women have endured in their sadness at the terrible loss of lives.
The Vietnam Women’s Memorial, located on the Mall in Washington not far from The Wall, pays tribute to those women for their sacrifice and service.

Now, in Iraq and Afghanistan women soldiers put their lives on the line every day as the crisis in that area continues. Some have returned home with missing limbs. Some have endured sexual harassment. But all of them bear the psychic scars of the brutality of war.
Let us remember and honor all our veterans – men and women - on this day."
