Jurate and John Kazickas Meet with KTU Representatives
01/29/2020
During their trip to Lithuania, Jurate Kazickas and her brother John Kazickas invited Kaunas University of Technology representatives that coordinate Dr. Joseph P. Kazickas programming and IT application contests for schoolchildren in Lithuania to their family residence in Vilnius.
KTU representatives shared the issues they run into coordinating the contests, as well as their observations regarding the interest in such events and students' results and motivation. During the meeting ways to improve the contests, to have more girls entering them and seeking IT careers down the road were discussed. Even though Lithuania is quite progressive in IT field, it is still quite common to run into stereotypical old-fashioned assumption that IT sector is not for women. It has been proven by many scientists, that boys' advantage in math and science is only a myth. Stereotyping and prejudgment affect girls' self-confidence and influence their career choices.
Jurate and John Kazickas, as well as their guests agreed that strong IT sector is crucial to Lithuania's future and hope that this partnership bringing such contests to the students will only grow.
