In an effort to better understand the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania position on the assessment of Lithuanian as a Foreign language in the US Lithuanian Heritage schools, KFF NYC director Neila Baumiliene who is also in charge of AKGP, took a trip to Dublin, Ireland.
On April 27, 2014 KFF initiated and financed an experimental Lithuanian as a foreign language exam which did not receive a support from the Ministry of Education and Science of Lithuania. Ministry's chancellor Mr.Dainius Numgaudis explained that the Ministry would be using Lithuanian Heritage school "4Vėjai" assessment system for the US Lithuanian Heritage schools starting 2015.
Mrs.Baumiliene visited the two Lithuanian Heritage schools "4Vėjai" while Saturday classes were in session, spoke to the administrators, teachers, students, parents, looked throught the teaching materials and programs, found out about the school's history and collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science of Lithuania and the one of Ireland. Ireland's Lithuanian Community Leader Arunas Teiserskis shared information about the new exams prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science of Lithuania, particularly for the Dublin schools, where students are learning Lithuanian as their native language.
KFF is willing to work with the Lithuanian Education Council of the US and Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania in creating Lithuanian Proficiency Exams to certify the competency of candidates (children, juniors and adults) from outside Lithuania in the Lithuanian as a foreign language.
