It is exciting to hear that philanthropic work of the Kazickas Family Foundation was recognized with the Gabriele Petkevicaite-Bite memorial award "Serve Lithuania" by Lithuanian Government.
It is quite symbolic and special to receive such acknowledgment during the year of Alexandra Kalvenaite-Kazickas' (1920-2011) 100th birthday anniversary. Gabriele Petkevicaite-Bite left a very special footprint in her life.
A writer, an educator, a social and political activist G. Petkevicaite-Bite (1861-1943) lived in the same house (Sv. Zitos g. 18, Panevezys) where Alexandra Kalvenaite's mom Veronika was renting an appartment. Years later it was truly impressive to learn that G. Petkevicaite-Bite became Alexandra's mentor and her role model. While her mom was at work, Alexandra would go to G. Petkevicaite-Bite's apartment for lunch during the school recess. In 1992 Alexandra wrote in her memoires: "Those were the most beautiful hours. The table was always beautifully set with the best dishes, napkins, all table manners were required. A maid would serve us. Our conversations were of the highest standard, overviewing and discussing daily events, and life, culture, morals and education, in general."
After moving to Vilnius to continue her studies, Alexandra Kalvenaite-Kazickas kept in touch with G. Petkevicaite-Bite and always carried her in her heart for the rest of her life. In March 17th, 1940 letter she wrote to her dear mentor:
"Dear Miss,
Please, accept my most heartfelt wishes on the occasion of your Birthday and Name day. From the bottom of my heart, I hope you have many more beautiful years ahead of you while making us happy with your valuable work, while yourself, being worthy of peaceful constant happiness.
I would like to express my gratitude to you and to Maryte for kind regards.
I already live in Vilnius, while working at an office and studying. I have never forgotten [you] kind Missy, and continue respecting and loving you with all my heart. Please, send my regards to Maryte.
Respectfully,
Aleks. Kalvenaite"
From early on the emphasis in Bite's work was on women education and civic responsibility and awareness. The writer was encouraging young people to seek education, to work for their future, was a dedicated womens rights advocate, took care of the ones in need, laid foundation for Lithuania's Independence. In a letter to her guardian Antanas Kasperavicius she wrote: "I've always loved you as my own son and I ask you not to focus only on your bed and meal, but remember why we call ourselves Humans!" It reflects G. Petkevicaite-Bite's values: eventhough her life was not easy, she understood the bigger purpose of life.
Gabriele Petkevicaite-Bite memorial award "Serve Lithuania" was established by Lithuanian Government in 2011 to honor Gabriele Petkevicaite-Bite's life and her noble work. It is awarded with a goal to encourage the nation to work to benefit Lithuania, to create and execute positive initiatives that develop civic responsibility, as well as national and cultural identity.
It is awarded to selective individuals and organizations each year in March, during G. Petkevicaite-Bite's birthday in Panevezys.
More about incredible life and work of G. Petkevicaite-Bite could be found at the Panevezys Museum of Ethnography where valuable collection is on display.
