Kaunas Biennial Held Events for People with Special Needs
12/03/2015

Kaunas Biennial every other fall organizes three months lasting cultural and educational events. This fall together with the Kazickas Family Foundation's help it held events for people with various special needs.

1. Organizers of creative workshop „Drevinė pušis“ (Hollow Pine) were invited to hold activities for visually and hearing impeared. On October 23rd an event was held for visually impeared at M. Žilinskas art gallery. On November 14th members of Kaunas hearing impeared youth association participated in creative workshop CHEMINIŲ JUNGČIŲ DĖLIONĖS (Chemical Bonds Puzzle) that is part of Kaunas Biennial main exhibit GIJOS: FANTASMAGORIJA APIE ATSTUMĄ (Threads: Distance Phantasmagoria), taking place at Kaunas Central Post Office. Different age groups of hearing impeared people were introduced to various art projects and created „chemical“ paintings. All participants actively participated in the creative process and shared their experiances afterwards. Parents mentioned that this was their first such experience. Events for visually impeared children are scheduled for December 4th.

50 people/children from various institutions participated at 2 events. We hope to see about 40 kids with their teachers at the event scheduled in December.

2. In cooperation with „Social Art Projects“ special program SUSITIKIME MUZIEJUJE (Let's Meet at the Museum) was introduced. People with various neurological disorders, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, dementia, Alzheimer's were invited. Those events were introduced by Lithuanian museum educators who borrowed this successful idea from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Main focus is on individual attention to each participant. Children, youth, adults and elderly from various Kaunas organizations, such as day centers, retirment homes, attended the program.

About 120 adults/children from 9 different organizations participated in the events held over 5 days.

3. Creative Workshops and Excursions. Each weekend Kaunas Biennial organizes creative workshops that offer to try out various art forms, different techniques and spend time with family and friends. „Tapyba ant vandens" (Drawing on Water) creative workshops, that took place October 24-25th, a group of kids and their teacher from child welfare center „Pastogė“ (Shelter) together with other participants tried out the marble technique. On November 7th special excursion throught the exhibit GIJOS: FANTASMAGORIJA APIE ATSTUMĄ (Threads: Distance Phantasmagoria) was offered to children (age 5 up). Exhibit was introduced by child psycologist/art therapist and was attended by children from the orphanage.

16 kids and 2 teachers from the child welfare center and the orphanage attended 2 events.
