The Lithuanian Residency Emergency Department Directorship Familiarization Rotation, a seven step three year program to expose 22 Lithuanian Physicians training in the specialty of Emergency Medicine about how to manage and direct Emergency Medicine Departments in community hospitals in Lithuania, ended this fall.
All twenty two ED residents fulfilled the management aspects of their ED Residency training, getting to meet ED Resident peers in Cincinnati and experiencing their training program, devoting time to special topics many aspects of which enabled them to critique their own programs in Lithuania and much joy for all those in America participating.
Between Spring of 2017 and the end of year 2019, 2 physicians at a time, one from Kaunas and another one from Vilnius, were shadowing Emergency medicine doctor Herb Loyd, head of Emergency medicine at Cincinnati hospital Kurt Knochel, Tri Health Good Samaritan Hospital Administrator Jamie Easterling and their incredible team of experts for 4-6 weeks.
On behalf of the Lithuanian Emergency Medicine community, Head of Kaunas Clinics Emergency Department dr. Kestutis Stasaitis was sharing his gratitude:
"We admire the effort made by Dr. Herbert Loyd, Dr. Kurt Knochel, all people in TriHealth, University of Cincinnati Emergency Department and Qualified Emergency Specialist Inc., the School of Aerospace Medicine at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, personnel in the Lithuanian American Embassy in Washington DC, Green Township Emergency Personnel, persons of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Lithuanian American Community, Cincinnati Fire Department personnel and many more for being so supportive and helping to make this program happen. Everyone participating experienced their kindness and eagerness to help. The Kazickas Family Foundation realized the importance of Emergency Medicine development in Lithuania, provided valuable support and continue to offer the assistance. I would also like to thank all residents and their families who devoted significant time to learn overseas and took responsibility to create better Emergency Medicine service in Lithuania. We can already see results of this rotation as Linas Darginavicius and Paulius Uksas had become heads of ED in Kaunas and Vinius, Vytautas Aukstakalnis is responsible for our residency in Kaunas, Martynas Gedminas coordinates quality and safety projects in Siauliai and all the rest became great ambassadors of Emergency Medicine specialty in our country. Their projects help our healthcare system to grow and become more efficient. This program made Vilnius and Kaunas EM communities to see things from the same perspective and now we are starting a national organization. Most of all, everyone is grateful to dr. Herbert Loyd for being such a bulldozer and managing this project, as well as his Family who let us in and made us feel at home. There is still a lot to do, but I believe we are on the right path now."
