On April 16, Joseph P. Kazickas, the founder of the Kazickas family Foundation, who passed away in 2014, would have been 103 years old.
He was a successful businessman and a generous philanthropist, but we also remember him today as Alexandra’s husband of 70 years, the father of Jurate, Joseph, Michael and John, and grandfather of 11.
He was a deep thinker and a philosophical man, who expressed his thoughts on life and love in his autobiography, Odyssey of Hope, his speeches on behalf of Lithuania’s struggle for freedom, and his many letters to his family.
On the completion of renovating a building in New York City in 1988 for his office which in 1998 became the headquarters of the Kazickas Family Foundation, he wrote a three page letter sharing his views on business ethics to his children, adding with obvious pleasure: “This building is small but whatever its size, it is ours!”
He concluded:
“Please remember that our individual and company achievements will depend on our personal input and team effort. We will have exciting deals but also disappointing ones. Life is composed of ups and downs so we must face our daily tasks with a smile and conduct ourselves in a manner appropriate to the standards of the family, whatever faces us.
Always bear in mind:
…Kindness in words creates confidence.
…Kindness in thoughts creates profoundness.
…Kindness in giving creates love.“
