Rokiskis Regional Museum shares that All Souls Day which we commemorate on November 2nd today, years ago lasted from the end of October when all the crops were done all the way till Christmas Eve. This time was not just for remembering the loved ones who passed away, but for spending quality time with the ones who are still with us. During the long evenings many stories, riddles had been told and traditions shared.
Fire has always been a symbol of the All Souls Day. The most important meaning of fire is warmth. Years ago there was no tradition to light the candles at the cemeteries as it is being done today. People used to make one large fire out of the old broken wooden crosses and the branches gathered while cleaning up the graveyards. It was a very primitive ritual symbolizing letting go of the old and bringing in the new. Burning the old creates the light and warmth. It was also believed that fire invited the souls. Lighting the candle helps the living ones make peace with the departed ones.
Let's light a candle while remembering our loved ones who passed away. Rest in peace dr. Joseph, his wife Alexandra and their son Alexander Kazickas. You are in our thoughts and hearts. We are grateful for giving us this opportunity to continue your work for Lithuania.
